My God Is Good

abelpic

My life owes much to the grace and hand of God. In retrospect, there have been many instances when God’s grace has blessed me, some of which I may not even be aware of today. Born into a Christian family, God blessed me with godly parents who emphasized discipline and good character; they did not hesitate to instill these through the rod. I grew up with a sister who has Down-Syndrome, and many of my childhood memories comprise of taking care of Abby, my sister and playing with her. As a child, the grace of God was evident in my family despite the circumstances. During those difficult times when my parents - both working to make a living - were coming to terms with raising a special child, He provided us with enough and we never lacked anything. The doctors believed that Abby could not walk; they were wrong for she took her first steps like any other child.

Growing up with many good friends, my childhood was a colourful one. While certain things seemed unreasonable or severely difficult at that time to my childlike mind, staying at home alone to take care of the house at the age of 5 or being made to study for hours in the day became good foundation stones in my life. God blessed me with good results in school and I thoroughly enjoyed my schooling days. I received a scholarship for my college education and am now at a good university with wonderful company.

In my secondary school days, I distinctly remember asking God for skills to serve Him in the youth group (365 Student Ministry from FGT), specifically, to play the drums and to worship lead one day. Today, by His grace my desire to serve has been answered. There were also times when tasks in school entrusted to me by the teachers were more than I felt I could handle, such as emceeing in official school ceremonies in front of thousands of students and preaching in the Christian Fellowship society, yet in all these tasks God became my strength and peace.

Through godly influence in my life and the guidance of good spiritual parents, I learnt to become a better person, believing I am able to be a good influence to my other friends as well. Having a relationship with Christ enables one to look beyond mediocrity and to live purposefully, not aimlessly. The blessings of God are abundant, but more importantly, His people can also be blessings to others. I am constantly reminded that even the unsaved who do not know Christ can see His mighty works. Once, my non-Christian aunties found me along the stairway of my house in the wee hours of the morning to ask me to pray for an aunty who had a severe stomach ache which had rendered her moaning and writhing. As I prayed over her, a sense of peace instantly came upon her and she was totally fine the next morning. Truly, God is more than able, and He is available to our needs.

It would suffice to say that God isn’t just a Saviour - He is a Father. A father, who desires to give good gifts and is faithful to His children.
